| |
Dear ,
I was glad to meet some of you at the strategic value awards last month. I'd like to thank my fellow trustee Ian McDonald-Wood once again for organising such a terrific event. Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the runners up.
Are you on Facebook? Or are you a twitterer? Love them or loathe them, social media are now an increasingly important phenomenon and your business needs to know about them if you are going to have an effective communications strategy. To help you achieve this important goal SPS has arranged a discount for members at the Social Media in a Corporate Context conference. See below for details.
And talking of social collaboration, don't forget the rapidly growing SPS group on LinkedIn...

Seizing the upside of the downturn
In issue 19 of Strategy Magazine we looked at how to take advantage of the downturn. During a crisis it is easy to miss golden opportunities that may appear. The current downturn can be harnessed to renew a sense of urgency and overcome complacency. As London Business School's Donald Sull suggests, in these times of flux managers should ask themselves questions concerning the retreat of competitors from attractive opportunities and whether expansion into growth markets is preferable to retrenching to the firm's core.

The science behind stress-free productivity
In volume 41, number 6 of Long Range Planning, Francis Heylighen and Clement Vidal reinterpreted David Allen's best-selling 'getting things done' (GTD) method for enhancing personal productivity and reducing stress from information overload - in light of how the brain actually processes information and plans actions in the real world.
Asserting the primacy of adapting over planning, the authors argue that true productivity should be measured not by the number of planned objectives achieved, but by the number of intrinsically worthwhile results, and by examining how the concept of 'stigmergy' might be employed to extend GTD to enhance collaborative work.
- SPS members receive Long Range Planning six times a year (worth GBP120 pa).

- SPS members enjoy access to the online library, with downloadable versions of over 100 articles published in Strategy Magazine and more than 50 executive summaries from Long Range Planning. For more information on membership benefits visit the SPS website and provide your details.

Recycling fashion
Fashion sales have increased about 60% in the UK in the past decade. As a result, textile waste is growing, with upwards of 1 million tonnes thrown away every year in the UK alone, accounting for about 3% of landfill. At the end of last year, new EU legislation targeted textile waste as a priority area. However, while recycling the clothes themselves to any large degree may remain a challenge, recycling per se may play an increasing role in fashion in other ways.
- SPS members enjoy free access to Shaping Tomorrow (worth GBP95 pa) – an organised database of over 25,000 future, strategy and change management resources, plus a weekly newsletter highlighting ten new trends.
