Frequent readers of newspapers like the Financial Timesor Wall Street Journal will come across the same company names year in, year out. This might give the impression that these companies have been around forever. But pick up a copy of any of these newspapers from 20, 30 or 50 years ago, and few of those mentioned in the headlines remain household names. Many have long since merged or been acquired by others, some are a shadow of their former selves, and some have disappeared due to a disruptive technology, business design or event.
